Nowadays, we don't have to wait for a relative coming from the province just so we can enjoy the taste of native chicken. There are now brands in the market selling free-range chicken. Recently, I learned that not all of them are free-range chicken but are actually just cage-free. This bit of trivia came from no other than the other half of the husband and wife team behind Pamora Farm, the home of real free-range chicken, Gerard Papillon.
Located in Barangay Garreta, Pidigan, Abra, Pamora Farm started raising free-range chicken in March 2000. PAMORA is actually the combined last name of Frenchman, Gerard Papillon, and his Filipina wife's maiden name, Tina Morados. The farm has since been breeding chicken whose colored breed come from France. Only quality F1's (first generation offsprings) are being raised in Pamora farm.
Being raised under the free-range method, Pamora Farm chickens can roam freely and live the natural way instead of being contained in a cage like commercial broiler production. They are grown at a minimum of 70 days unlike the commercial broilers tjat are forced to grow abnormally fast in about 28-35 days only. Pamora Farm chickens are fed milled yellow corn plus whatever organic food (insects, grass, seeds, etc.) that they get as they forage for 8 hours during daytime.
Capon Chicken is big at a minimum of 3kg. Perfect for serving on Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas dinners. |
Aside from whole chickens, choice cut-ups, and chicken burgers, Pamora Farm also produces limited quantities of free-range chicken eggs. Again, Gerard reminded me that their eggs are the real thing. I've been buying brown eggs for the past few months to supplement our attempts to healthy living. Apparently, based on the price of the branded "natural" eggs I was buying, it could be just commercial eggs produced by chickens fed with carotene to make their eggs appear brown. Pamora Farm eggs' shells are thicker and the yolks are harder to break than the commercial ones. I tried to compare the two brands at home and I was surprised that my old brand does look like colored commercial chicken eggs.
