Academy Awards Predictions

As the 2020 Academy Awards approach, film fans are preparing for the biggest night of the year. This year's ceremony marks the 92nd time the Oscars will be held and the nominations are as interesting as ever. This past year heralded in a massive year for film with blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame breaking records and Netflix releases like Marriage Story breaking hearts. While the true insight can be left to the experts like Heather Parry, check out some of the predictions on the table for the 2020 Oscars.

Best Picture

With so many exciting nominees competing for the top award of the night, this year's Best Picture race is truly a toss-up. While Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood was an early front-runner, the love note to the film industry of the 1960s has lost some steam and buzz as the awards race has chugged forward. It's a similar story for Joker, the controversial take on the noted Batman villain. The technical and masterful war epic 1917 has started to clean up at the awards that precede the Oscars, indicating that things could be taking a turn for the film. The dark horse of the race is Bong Joon-Ho's Parasite, the razor-sharp class drama that marks South Korea's first foray into Best Picture.

Best Director

Another big award of the evening is in Best Director. This category has proven to be controversial long before the Oscars ceremony goes to air: many critics and fans were upset to see Greta Gerwig, director of the acclaimed adaptation of Little Women, excluded from the category, leaving it male-dominated once again. Some are predicting the award to land with Quentin Tarantino, while others are pulling for Sam Mendes and his "one-take" illusion of 1917. Once again, though, Bong Joon-Ho could take a surprise victory and make history in yet another way. Regardless, the Oscars will make February 9th an exciting evening for everyone.
